Responsible forest management for the wood industry: the Vancouver Declaration signed in Canada

The only participating bed industry company is Dorsal of Italy, which continues its commitment to sustainable products.

The world's companies with the most advanced environmental awareness have signed in Canada the Vancouver Declaration, a document that commits them to further promote the preservation of forests in their industrial processes that use wood, paper or other forest products. Among the 56 signatories, the only one in the bed industry is Italian: it is Dorsal, a leading bedding company based in Corbanese di Treviso.

The Vancouver declaration is part of a larger project of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), a certification scheme that promotes responsible forest management, to help international companies achieve the Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the United Nations. It is a public pledge, launched at the 2017 FSC General Assembly, by which companies around the world commit to a more sustainable supply chain of forest products, but also a recognition of FSC as the most rigorous certification scheme for responsible forest management.Dorsal is an integral part of this "pact" that looks to the future of nature and the world.

"Being the only company in bedding in the world among the signatories of the Vancouver Declaration is for us," explained Lucia Moretti, owner of Dorsal, "un source of pride, public proof of our commitment to a more sustainable future: we are in fact the first to boast FSC certification on our range of anatomical bed bases (with legs). We are also convinced," he added, "that it doesn't matter in which sector we operate: we can all demonstrate our support by adhering to and respecting the principles expressed in the Declaration.

The Veneto-based company, which has been a leader in the sleeping systems sector for more than 85 years, has long been attentive to the eco-sustainable dimension of its products: it was the first in Italy to create a bed base (with legs) made of 100% FSC®-certified wood, the label for responsible forest management. In 2015 it obtained FSC chain-of-custody certification by carrying out its sustainable policy that is attentive to the environment and human health. But its commitment to environmental stewardship has not ended: Dorsal today has created a whole range of bed bases (with legs) made of FSC®-certified wood, converting the entire line of Anatomical Bed Bases (with legs) solely to FSC®-certified wood, a testament to the company's determination to pursue this new sustainable path. It consists of 13 models that are then declined into 70 versions. A range created to respond to more and more environmental awareness.

"Being signatories to this declaration," concluded Moretti, "will be a reason for further stimulation in continuing the sustainable path we have taken. We believe very much in this project, the forests are the Amazon we see in nature documentaries but they are also the forests and woods we know well in Italy, where we enter in the summer to find refreshment, which are home to thousands of plant and animal species, places where man lives in symbiosis with nature and which represent an environmental wealth of inestimable value. But a forest cared for and managed with sustainable and renewable methods does not run out! That's why offering products with certified sustainability is a small but crucial step toward keeping forests healthy, ensuring their continuity, their natural renewal, preserving them for the needs of future generations."
